We recently ran an A/B test for a multi-site accommodation provider to understand how headline style influences booking behaviour.
The test
On individual property pages, we compared two versions of the main H1 heading:
-
Descriptive headline: “Awake to Port Levy’s Sunrise from Your Glass Sanctuary”
-
Location-based headline: “Pōhue, Banks Peninsula”
The hypothesis was that a more descriptive, emotion-driven heading above the fold would help travellers visualise the experience, build trust, and ultimately drive more bookings.
The results
The test ran for six weeks on the main website, targeting both local and international travellers. The key metric was clicks on the ‘Book This Pod’ link.
At the end of the test, results showed:
-
Descriptive headline: 26.9% conversion rate
-
Original (location-based): 29.3% conversion rate
That’s an 8.4% lower performance for the descriptive version.
While the difference wasn’t statistically significant due to sample size, the trend suggested that simplicity — and instant recognition of location — was more effective at driving action than creative description.
The takeaway
For this brand, clarity outperformed creativity. Travellers scanning listings appear to prefer instantly knowing where they’re staying rather than what it feels like.
The decision: retain the simpler location-based headline, and use this learning to inform future copy tests — particularly around balancing emotion, trust, and clarity in high-intent areas of the site.
Why it matters
Even when a test doesn’t deliver the expected uplift, it provides insight. These micro-experiments build a richer understanding of user behaviour and guide smarter design and messaging decisions across digital experiences.
At scale, these learnings compound, helping brands build experiences that convert more visitors into guests, one small win at a time.
